Tutor Volunteer

HomeWorks is looking for enthusiastic and committed volunteer tutors who are passionate about educational equity, tutoring, mentoring, and building relationships with HomeWorks scholars. HomeWorks Trenton is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides a community-based after-school boarding program that includes academic and social-emotional enrichment activities to supplement public schools, empower women, and build community leaders. HomeWorks fosters a community of empowered young women from Trenton who strive to achieve academic success and develop identity-driven leadership skills. In order to reach their full potential and positively impact the world around them.

Tutoring hours will be Monday through Thursday from 7:00pm through 8:30pm at Rider University campus. Tutors will come to the HomeWorks facility and complete tutoring in person.

OBJECTIVE: 

• To assist HomeWorks high school level scholars with homework, study skills, and content knowledge in all core content areas including, science, language arts, mathematics, and history. The volunteer tutors will aid in helping scholars achieve their academic goals, assess knowledge and skills in content areas, provide individualized support in the academic area, teach subject-specific content and monitor scholar progress , assist scholars who are struggling in a specific content area in school, and assist scholars in improving their performance in an academic subject, becoming more comfortable with test taking, and obtaining in-depth knowledge of a subject.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Commit to volunteering Monday through Thursday from 7:00-8:30pm beginning September 7, 2023.

• Prepare for tutoring sessions as needed.

• Analyze information from teachers in order to assist scholars.

• Attend tutor orientation on September 7, 2023 at 6PM.

• Attend tutor training sessions led by Bespoke Education as requested by the HomeWorks team. 

• Build strong rapport with scholars and show personal interest in their academic success and growth.

• Notify the head tutor in advance so that a substitute tutor can be found. In the event of an unexpected absence, please send a slack message to all of the coordinators. If a volunteer tutor consistently neglects their responsibilities, the volunteer or tutor may be dismissed.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Strength in either high school level mathematics, english language arts, high school level sciences, high school level history, foreign languages, etc. 

• Enrollment in a teacher preparation program and/or professional working experience are desirable but not required. 

• Interest in and comfort working with ninth and tenth grade female students. 

• Cultural competence and the ability to honor and respect the beliefs, language, interpersonal styles and behaviors of individuals.

ORIENTATION AND TRAINING: 

• The House Director, Assistant House Director, or Head Tutor will be available to discuss and to address any concerns. 

• A manual will be provided to tutors by the House Director, Assistant House Director, or Head Tutor, who will oversee all tutor volunteers. 

• A volunteer tutor orientation will be held in September by the House Director, Assistant House Director, or Head Tutor. Tutors will need to familiarize themselves with the manual, understanding the expectations of tutor volunteers.

• A volunteer tutor will be expected to attend any tutor training sessions led by Bespoke Education.
