Why HomeWorks?

Trenton is a culturally rich community. The New Jersey capital, once an industrial giant, coined the slogan “Trenton Makes, The World Takes.” As factories closed and white flight plagued the city, Trenton transitioned to a majority minority and low-income population.

While vibrant cultural events like “Art All Night” still characterize the city, Trenton faces enormous health and social challenges. In particular, Trenton’s youth suffer immensely. Cycles of systemic injustices fuel obstacles to the success of Trenton students.

According to the New Jersey Department of Education’s 2016- 2017 School Performance Summary Report,

10%

of Trenton’s public school students meet Math State Standards

20.5%

of Trenton’s public school students meet English State Standards

36%

of high school students are chronically absent, missing more than 10% of school days per year

10%

of Trenton students are college ready

40%

move at least once a year, affecting their housing stability and school attendance

High schoolers report not only having a lack of hope in Trenton but also constantly feeling unsafe. *

Here's how we're breaking down barriers to help Trenton high school girls succeed.

HomeWorks Trenton is a community-based, after-school boarding program that provides academic and social-emotional enrichment activities to supplement public schools, empower women, and build community leaders.

Our Challenge

To make it possible for Trenton girls to...

Achieve their full academic potential by supplementing the education they receive in the Trenton School District.

Build social and emotional skills to succeed individually and to positively impact their schools and communities.

Develop a growth mindset, a sense of empowerment and agency, and concrete skills to identify and solve community challenges.

Our mission is to foster a community of empowered young women who strive to achieve their full potential and positively impact the world around them.

Our Theory of Change

1.

PROVIDE DORMITORY LIVING THAT ENRICHES AND BUILDS COMMUNITY

Scholars will regularly attend school, achieve high academic success, and develop self-esteem and a growth mindset as they build meaningful relationships within their HomeWorks community.

2.

EMPOWER YOUNG WOMEN

Scholars will become empowered and empathetic women, uplifting each other to redress inequity as they lead and enhance their own communities.

3.

Scholars will create a ripple effect that impacts civil rights issues. Including education equity, wealth equity and racial integration, enabling citizens to fully participate in democracy.

Global Expansion

Free from the bureaucracy and high cost of operating an actual school, our niche model is specifically designed to be scalable and can be attached to any school or group of schools in the country or world. We expect this model to spread to other urban communities as a cost-efficient yet powerful way to positively impact the lives of young people and their neighborhoods.

Help us empower young women in Trenton.
