HomeWorks Scholar Londyn Shares Her Story

At a recent HomeWorks donor appreciation event in May, our community had the opportunity to hear one of our scholars, Londyn, share her reflections on her journey at HomeWorks.

Londyn is a third-year scholar at HomeWorks. In her speech, Londyn recalled how she was able to grow with the academic and social support she received at HomeWorks, and ended with an expression of gratitude for all those committed to furthering HomeWorks mission, parents, donors, staff, volunteers, and her fellow scholars.

Watch the video and read her speech below:

A year ago, if you told me I would be voluntarily making a speech, I wouldn't believe you, but that's what HomeWorks has done for me. It’s allowed me to step outside my comfort zone in a safe and supportive environment.

Being an only child I often spent my afternoons in my own company, but now at HomeWorks my afternoons are filled with the laughter and company of others. Not only have I grown closer with my fellow scholars but also staff members who are always open to talk and lend a helping hand.

This first year at HomeWorks has not been without struggles. There were times when I felt insecure about my academic capabilities; however, through the endless academic support and kind words given, I was able to gain a new perspective on learning.

I was never someone who needed help with classwork or homework and therefore when the work this year got tough I tended to struggle in silence by myself. Through reflection I discovered this wasn’t the right way to go about it, and I should instead take advantage of the academic support offered to me. HomeWorks has this amazing thing where they offer in-person volunteer tutors who come and help students with their homework. Through this I was not only able to raise my grade but my confidence in myself.

For this growth I would like to thank my fellow scholars for always uplifting me, staff members for encouraging me, Mrs. Natalie [Tung] for this opportunity, and the donors for making this all possible.
