Trenton teens get tour of Comcast Technology Center, learn about coding and tech careers - Trentonian (NJ)

Young women from Trenton got an up-close look at tech careers recently thanks to a collaboration between HomeWorks Trenton and Comcast.

Eight high school students involved in the HomeWorks Trenton program visited the Comcast Technology Center and had a chance to talk with members of BENgineers (engineer members of Comcast’s Black Employee Network) and TechWomen@Comcast (Comcast’s network of women technologists) to introduce them to careers in technology.

The students toured the Comcast Technology Center, visited the Universal Sphere, heard from the engineers and saw product demonstrations to understand how Comcast’s female employees develop innovative products, experiences and services. The visit gave the girls a chance to speak with the engineers at Comcast about their backgrounds, education and career paths.

The tour also introduced the girls to coding and helped them understand how what they learn translates into real-world technology. The students will also be able to join a series of coding classes designed by Comcast engineers throughout the rest of the month and into January.

Comcast employees are volunteering as part of Team UP, an always-on, 365-days-a-year effort that provides opportunities for Comcast employees to further their involvement in local communities.

At the end of the visit, the students were surprised with backpack giveaways that included an iPad for each student.

Since 2020, the Comcast Foundation has provided $50K in grant support to HomeWorks for technology training programs.

Founded in 2016, HomeWorks Trenton is nonprofit operating a free, after-school residential program for marginalized high school girls attending Trenton public schools that provides academic and identity-driven leadership enrichment to supplement public schools and develop community leaders.
